People are starting to discover all the wonderful uses for this traditional French classic. "Creme Fraiche" translates to 'fresh cream', which sums it up pretty well. Soft cow's milk cream is gently acidified overnight to create a silky smooth final product which tastes very similar to sour cream. It's more rich, smoother, and not as sour. It can be used as a sour cream, but in more applications.
It's wonderful on savory dishes, but also sweet things too. Try creme fraiche with fresh fruit, or spooned over desserts. Also classic on caviar. A great fridge staple to have on-hand.
